Don’t Do the Birdbox Challenge While Driving It Will Cause a Car Accident
A 17-year-old Utah driver covered her eyes in a stunt inspired by the Netflix movie “Bird Box” and caused a highway crash earlier this week, a Utah Police Department revealed in a Twitter post.
“What happened was, she and the teen boy passenger of hers were driving down the road and decided they wanted to do this challenge. She was wearing a sort of beanie hat and pulled that down over her eyes and covered her eyes,” Lt. Lyman of the Layton Police Department reported.
He said the teens were mum at first about the cause of their movie meme-inspired crash.
“They were not initially forthcoming, but over the course of a few days, we did some follow-up interviews,” Lt. Lyman said. “We ended up getting tip from the school where the girl went saying she had been trying this, and it happened as a result of the Bird Box challenge.
In a viral tweet posted Jan. 2, Netflix issued a safety warning about the challenge.
“Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes,” the company tweeted.
Teens tend to follow social media and one YouTuber Jake Paul (the same one that videod a suicide), took to social media attempting the BirdBox challenge all day including while driving.
